“It was a very tough tournament, I actually didn’t think that I would win,” said Jimenez Kasintseva, who divides her time between the tiny European state — sandwiched between Spain and France — and Barcelona, where her father has a tennis academy.

“I guess I fought a lot for it. I was about to lose in some matches, and I just kept fighting. I guess that’s how I won.”

The global lineup has a 3-2 edge since the format began in 2015, but the Americans will have their chance to level the rivalry on February 14 as a tuneup for the NBA All-Star Game two days later in Chicago.

New Orleans Pelicans forward Williamson, the top pick in last year’s NBA Draft, was selected as a US team injury replacement for Chicago center Wendell Carter Jr., who is out with a sprained right ankle.

In four debut NBA games since starting his season three months late due to a knee injury, 19-year-old Williamson has averaged 18.0 points and 8.3 rebounds for the Pelicans.

Washington Wizards forward Hachimura, who turns 22 on February 8, is expected to return this weekend from a groin injury that has sidelined him for the past six weeks.

Hachimura, averaging 13.9 points and 5.8 rebounds, is the first Japanese player in the Rising Stars event. He was the first Japanese player ever selected the first round of the NBA Draft when he went to the Wizards last year with the ninth selection.

Slovenian swingman Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks and US guard Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks will play in the Rising Stars event for the second time then serve as NBA All-Star Game starters, the first time since Jason Kidd and Grant Hill in 1996 that two second-year players will start the NBA All-Star Game.

Joining Doncic and Hachimura on the World team are New Orleans guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker of Canada, Phoenix center Deandre Ayton of Bahamas, New York swingman R.J. Barrett of Canada, Memphis forward Brandon Clarke of Canada, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Canada, Washington center Moritz Wagner of Germany, Detroit swingman Svi Mykhailiuk of Ukraine and Minnesota guard Josh Okogie of Nigeria.

Alexander-Walker and Gilgeous-Alexander are cousins and among a record four Canadians in the event.

Williamson and Young are joined on the American squad by Charlotte forwards Miles Bridges and P.J. Washington, Charlotte guard Devonte Graham, Miami guards Tyler Herro and Kendrick Nunn, Memphis forward Jaren Jackson Jr. and guard Ja Morant and Golden State Warriors forward Eric Paschall.

NBA opening-night rosters featured 108 international players from 38 nations, with all 30 clubs having at least one player from outside the United States.

NBA: Mavs rising star Luka Doncic expected to miss two weeks

By Agence France-Presse

Dallas Mavericks rising star Luka Doncic is expected to miss two weeks — at least six games — with a right ankle injury suffered in practice.

Coach Rick Carlisle said an MRI on Friday showed a “moderate” sprain.

The second-year standout from Slovenia was selected as an All-Star starter last week and on Friday the league said he had been chosen to play in the Rising Stars game.

Carlisle said Doncic should be able to take part in the all-star weekend festivities.

“It’s my feeling that he’ll be able to participate at some level,” Carlisle said.

The Rising Stars game is set for February 14, with the All-Star Game to follow on February 16 in Chicago.

This is Doncic’s second ankle injury of the season. In mid-December, he missed four games with a right ankle sprain. That injury occurred when he stepped on the foot of Miami’s Kendrick Nunn.

In 43 games this season, Doncic is averaging 28.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.7 assists.

Irving’s electrifying performance saw him shoot 19 of 23 from the field as he made his first 10 shots of the game before finishing it off with a dominating stretch in the fourth.

“I hit a few shots in first half, so I just kept it going,” Irving said. “The Kobe mentality, and Mamba mentality, keep going, keep going. It felt good.”

Irving also tied a season-high by making seven three-pointers on nine attempts for the Nets, who beat Chicago for the ninth time in the last 11 meetings.

“I am just happy to be back playing the game I love. The most beautiful sound is just hearing these fans and having my family here,” he said.

Irving produced his second 50-point game this season and fourth of his career.

He reached 50 points with a three-pointer that pushed the lead to 123-106 with 5:33 remaining. He closed out his night with 2:43 remaining to a standing ovation.

It was the third-highest point total for Irving, and the eighth 50-point game in Nets’ history. His career high was 57 points in 2015 with Cleveland.

The Nets led 107-99 when Irving came back into the game with 9:14 left in the fourth quarter.

He scored 10 straight Brooklyn points to expand the lead to 117-103 with 7:43 to go.

Elsewhere, Nikola Jokic flirted with a triple double and Will Barton scored 24 points as the Denver Nuggets snapped the Milwaukee Bucks nine-game win streak with a 127-115 victory.

Jokic finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Nuggets, who spread the scoring around as all nine players who got into the contest scored in double figures.

Michael Porter had 15 points and 11 rebounds before leaving in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.

Malik Beasley added 16 points and Monte Morris had 14 for Denver, who made a season-best 22 three-pointers but missed another 24.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 31 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists, Khris Middleton added 24 points and Eric Bledsoe scored 15 in the loss.

Also, Pascal Siakam had 30 points, and the visiting Toronto Raptors stretched their winning streak to 10 games by cruising past the struggling Detroit Pistons 105-92.

Serge Ibaka scored 21 points, and Fred VanVleet tallied 16 points, eight rebounds and nine assists for the Raptors, who made 51 percent of their shot attempts.

Norman Powell led Toronto’s reserves with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Chris Boucher chipped in eight points, seven rebounds in the win.

Toronto center Marc Gasol missed the game with a hamstring injury.

Also, Nick Nurse led the Toronto Raptors to the NBA title in his first season as an NBA coach and now, in his second season, he’ll be coaching one of the teams in the All-Star Game on February 16.

The Raptors’ win assured them of the best record in the Eastern Conference among teams whose coaches are eligible to get the honor, giving the coaching nod to Nurse. He will coach Team Giannis.

NBA: Kobe Bryant ‘not forgotten’ as Lakers honor franchise legend

By Agence France-Presse

LeBron James spoke for everyone as the Los Angeles Lakers honored the memory of franchise icon Kobe Bryant on Friday, delivering the simple message: “Not forgotten.”

In a night of ceremony and tears at Staples Center, the Lakers hosted the Portland Trail Blazers in their first NBA game since a helicopter crash claimed the lives of Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others on Sunday.

Portland’s 127-119 victory — fueled by Damian Lillard’s 48 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists — seemed little more than a footnote.

“We all wanted to win this game really bad,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. “Our guys poured their guts out, out there. So I’m disappointed we didn’t get the win, but I couldn’t be more happy and more proud of our guys’ effort and their performance.”

Lakers star Anthony Davis admitted he felt anxious and nervous going into a night that Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said was “about Kobe Bryant.”

Fans were greeted by a sea of Bryant jerseys — one draping each seat.

In the darkened arena, a purple-tinged spotlight picked out the Bryant jerseys hanging in the rafters — his numbers 8 and 24 both retired by the Lakers.

Bouquets of red roses held open two courtside seats in honor of Bryant and Gianna, while yellow roses sculpted the numbers of 8 and 24 in massive arrangements on the court.

As Usher sang “Amazing Grace,” a hush fell over the crowd.

Los Angeles Philharmonic cellist Ben Hong then played as a video montage of Bryant interviews, interspersed with on-court moments and intimate family pictures, was played on the massive scoreboard.

After a 24.2-second moment of silence, Boyz II Men — from Bryant’s hometown of Philadelphia — brought James to tears with their performance of the Star Spangled Banner in the dimly lit arena.

Then it was James’s turn, his voice solemn as he recited the names of all nine killed when the helicopter went down in the rugged hills of Calabasas in suburban Los Angeles: Gianna’s basketball teammates Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester, Alyssa’s parents John and Keri Altobelli, Payton’s mother Sarah Chester, basketball coach Christina Mauser, pilot Ara Zobayan and, finally, Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

“I’ve got something written down,” James said. “They asked me to kind of stay on course or whatever the case may be.

“But Laker Nation, I’d be selling y’all short if I read off this shit so I’m gonna go straight from the heart,” he added to cheers from the crowd of 18,997.

“The first thing that comes to mind, man, is it’s all about family.

“As I look around this arena, we’re all grieving, we’re all hurt, we’re all heartbroken. When we go through things like this the best thing you can do is lean on the shoulders of your family.”

James said the time for a Bryant memorial would come, but that he considered this night “a celebration” of Bryant’s 20-year career — all spent with the Lakers — and of the life he was making since he retired in 2016.

“This is a celebration of the 20 years of the blood, the sweat, the tears, the broken down body, the getting up, sitting down to everything, the countless hours, the determination to be as great as he could be.

“Tonight we celebrate the kid who came here at 18 years of age, retired at 38 and became the best dad we’ve seen over the last three years.”

“The fact that I’m here now means so much to me,” James added. “I’m going to continue with my teammates to continue his legacy not only for this year but as long as we can continue to play the game of basketball that we love, because that’s what Kobe Bryant would want.

“So in the words of Kobe Bryant: ‘Mamba Out,’” James said, recalling Bryant’s sign-off when he retired.

“But in the words of us: ‘Not forgotten.’ Live on brother.”

‘Just beautiful’

And Bryant lived in symbols all over Staples Center — a special KB logo painted on the court, and Lakers team introductions in which every player was introduced “From Lower Merion High School, No. 8, Kobe Bryant.”

James had prepared for the game with Bryant’s No. 24 jersey hanging next to his locker — the same locker Bryant used when he helped Los Angeles win five NBA titles.

“What he said was just beautiful,” Vogel said. “It represented who he is and really who we are as a team, as an organization.”

Staples Center officials had asked fans without tickets to watch the tribute from home, but many couldn’t stay away.

Thousands thronged the downtown arena and the neighboring LA Live entertainment complex, some adding to the memorials of flowers, stuffed animals, balloons and candles that have sprung up and some just finding comfort in being there.

Many wrote on massive paper-covered boards erected for the purpose, although pavements were also black with written messages.

Impressionist painter Reza Safa said his reconstruction of a photograph showing Bryant carrying Gianna on his shoulders was a gift for Bryant’s wife, Vanessa.

“Tonight, I’m not going to the game,” Safa said. “I’m just going to paint.”

NBA: LeBron James vows to carry on Kobe Bryant’s legacy

LeBron James vowed Friday that he and his Los Angeles Lakers teammates would continue the legacy of club icon Kobe Bryant, who died Sunday in a helicopter crash.

James, his voice fraught with emotion, addressed the Staples Center crowd before the Lakers returned to NBA action for the first time since Bryant’s death.

Flinging away his prepared notes, James said to cheers he would speak from the heart, calling on all present to celebrate Bryant’s life and a career that included five NBA titles in 20 years with the Lakers.

“I know at some point we will have a memorial for Kobe,” he said. “But I look at this as a celebration tonight.

“This is a celebration of the 20 years of the blood, the sweat, the tears, the broken down body, the getting up, sitting down to everything, the countless hours, the determination to be as great as he could be.

“Tonight we celebrate the kid who came here at 18 years of age, retired at 38 and became the best dad we’ve seen over the last three years.

After the game, James said he decided to deviate from his notes “pretty much when I went up there.

“I wanted to make sure I acknowledged all the lives that were lost Sunday morning and I didn’t want to mess that up so I looked at the names on a paper,” James said.

He movingly pronounced the names of all nine people who died in the crash, a somber list that included Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna.

“But when I kind of looked at the notecards I had or that was kind of being insisted on — and some of it was what I wanted to talk about — I decided for me personally just letting the words flow right from the heart and whatever comes out they’re pure — there’s truth to it.”

One truth he’d come to realize, James said, was that the ruthlessly competitive Bryant had blossomed since retiring in 2016 as he focused on creative pursuits and life with his wife, Vanessa, and their four daughters.

“Seeing Kobe play the game of basketball 20 years for the Lakers since he was 18 to 38, and I was like you know it’s crazy, these last three years, out of all the success he had, five rings, multiple MVPs, All-Star Game MVP, first-league everything, all-life, all-world all-basketball — it felt like these last three years was the happiest I’ve ever seen him,” James said.

PSA Awards: Gymnast Carlos Yulo to receive President’s Award

Carlos Yulo provided one of the greatest moments in Philippines sports in the year just passed.

The petite 19-year-old made history after winning the gold in the men’s floor exercise of the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. The exploit made Yulo the first Filipino and the first male gymnast from Southeast Asia to claim a gold in the world stage.

It was a twin feat for the 4-foot-11 Manila-born gymnast as he likewise secured a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Yulo later capped 2019 by serving as one of the leading lights for Team Philippines in the 30th Southeast Asian Games. He won two gold and five silver medals to help the host country regain the overall title of the biennial meet 14 years after first winning it in 2005.

For stirring Philippine gymnastics to greater heights and giving the country another sporting pride, Yulo will be conferred with the President’s Award during the SMC-Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Annual Awards Night on March 6 at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel.

The young gymnast joins an elite list of personalities who were previously honored by the sportswriting community with the same award, among them include Manny V. Pangilinan, the multi-titled National University Lady Bulldogs team, billiards champion Rubilen Amit and Dennis Orcollo, and slalom racing champ Milo Rivera.

Yulo’s historic achievement will forever be etched in Philippine sports annals and one that will stand the test of time, making no other person deserving of the award, according to PSA president and Manila Bulletin sports editor Tito S. Talao.

Team Philippines recapturing the SEA Games overall crown of which Yulo was a big part, will be recognized with the prestigious Athlete of the Year award solely given by the country’s oldest media organization during the gala night presented by MILO, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Cignal TV, Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), and Rain or Shine.

The Athlete of the Year and President’s Award are just two of the trophies to be bestowed by the PSA on top personalities and entities who made Philippine sports a memorable one last year.

Other special awards to be given are Executive of the Year, National Sports Association of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Ms. Basketball, Mr. Volleyball, Ms. Golf, Mr. Football, and Coach of the Year.

Not to be missed out are the recipients of Major Awards, Tony Siddayao Awards, MILO Junior Athletes Award, and numerous citations.

BY TITO S. TALAO

ROME — The Philippine Basketball Association’s ambitious plan to build its own venue, a project that could cost a billion, has been gathering dust far back in the burner but apparently continues to dwell in the mind of Chairman Ricky Vargas.

A search committee was formed years ago to pinpoint a suitable location for a possible lease or buy deal with the lot’s owner, but initial steps encountered immediate hurdles and the plan never left the ground and had been shelved since.

Vargas, governor of TNT KaTropa, brought the idea back to light during the PBA board’s program and planning session at the Rosa Grand Hotel in Milan Thursday when he went through expenses incurred by the league last year and expected revenues from the coming 45th season.

“Sixty million pesos for venue rental alone, that’s the problem,” Vargas said. “Maybe it’s really about time we build our own coliseum.”

Quickly, however, Vargas made it clear the project isn’t being resurrected or that there are plans to do so.”

Still he left the door slightly open.

“The problem is the property,” he said. “If we can find someone who will donate a lot…the construction naman kasi can be loaned from the banks.”

Vargas, meantime, said the PBA is looking at a projected P620 million revenue — a 33 percent increase — during the 45th season from raised broadcast rights fees, sponsorships from Excite, the league’s marketing arm, TV 5 and the 12 ballclubs, and earnings from a more aggressive digital and social media campaign.

International TV rights are also being negotiated by PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and his staff for added earnings, Vargas said.

“The PBA is in good financial health, and we’re looking to another fruitful season. If we do this right, 2020 will be a good year,” he said, adding that out-of-the-country games are being planned in Dubai, Riyadh and the United States.

Marcial has just been reappointed to a fresh three-year term with a full year left in his current contract, allowing to run the ship until 2023.

The league’s 10th commissioner announced that the inaugural game for the 45th season on March 1 will be between San Miguel Beer, the reigning 5-time Philippine Cup champion, and the Magnolia Hotshots at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Preceding the SMB-Magnolia matchup will be the Leo Awards, where SMB’s June Mar Fajardo hopes to fend off NorthPort’s Christian Standhardinger, TNT’s Jayson Castro and Columbian Dyip rookie CJ Perez in his bid to win a sixth straight Most Valuable Player trophy.

Highlighting the opening ceremonies will be a special tribute for the late Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, a frequent visitor in the country and the PBA.

“Kobe has touched and inspired each one of us,” said Vargas.
