NBA: Heat hold on late, end 76ers’ unbeaten start at home

    By the Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — Perfect home record at stake, a game down to the wire, and the Philadelphia 76ers sure could have used Jimmy Butler in the clutch, just like he was for them so many times last season.

The Heat were glad to have the All-Star on their side — and Butler did enough to help spoil the Sixers’ perfect home record.

Kendrick Nunn scored 26 points and Bam Adebayo had 23 to help the Miami Heat hand the 76ers their first home loss of the season, 108-104 on Wednesday night.

Butler and the Heat won their 20th game, and perhaps proved they’re more than a one-man show.

“This is a team of one star?” Butler asked incredulously. “Who’s our star, Bam? I’ll take it. I’ll take Bam as our star any day. I ain’t worried about what anybody says. We’re content with who we are.”

The 76ers had been 14-0 at home, including a 113-86 victory over the Heat last month.

They came within a late bucket or two of staying flawless in Philly.

Tobias Harris buried a 3-pointer for the Sixers with 25.5 seconds left that made it 106-104 and they had sudden life when Nunn missed twice at the free throw line. Al Horford, though, missed an open 3-point attempt from the wing and the Heat escaped in a thriller.

Duncan Robinson had 15 for the Heat and hit a pair of 3s in the fourth that stretched the lead to 14 points. Nunn buried a 30-footer for a 99-83 lead that should have been enough of a cushion for Miami.

Joel Embiid, who missed Sunday’s rout by the Nets with an upper respiratory illness, had 22 points and 19 rebounds. Harris scored 20 points and the Sixers struggled to get going until late against Miami’s 2-3 zone that put them on their heels.

“We weren’t making shots and when you’re not making shots, especially when a team is playing zone, they’re going to keep on doing it,” Embiid said. “They did it all game and that’s how they won the game.”

Butler scored 14 points for the Heat and was pretty much a non-factor until late in his second game back in Philadelphia.

Butler was soundly booed the first few times he touched the ball and continued to get jeers throughout the game. He played 55 regular-season games for the Sixers last season, averaging 18.2 points after being acquired in a trade with Minnesota last November. He helped Philadelphia beat Brooklyn in the first round of the playoffs before the 76ers were eliminated in the second round by Toronto.

Butler left Philadelphia in the offseason, signing a $142 million, four-year deal with the Heat in a sign-and-trade that brought Josh Richardson to Philadelphia.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Butler has been a perfect fit for a team trying to return to the playoffs after missing them last season.

“I feel like I’ve coached a lot of guys like Jimmy that are adults, that are very serious about winning, about the process of winning,” he said. “Ultra competitive. He’s a max player. We wanted a max player, someone that would fit our culture and our system.”

Richardson did his part late, hitting a 3 that made it an eight-point game and one more that made it 101-97 and sent another packed house into a frenzy. With a perfect home start still within reach, the 76ers coughed up the ball to Miami — and Butler crushed them with an assist on a 3 from Derrick Jones Jr. that gave the Heat needed breathing room.

Butler sank two free throws with 33.9 seconds left, toying with the 76ers to the end.

“I don’t think we had a sting to our defense,” 76ers coach Brett Brown said. “What did they have, four 3s with a second left? Sometimes it’s just not your night. There were times they were hurling up shots at the end of the clock, one of which was a bank shot, you feel like maybe it’s going to be a long night.”

NBA: Kemba Walker scores 32 to lead Celtics past Mavericks

    By the Associated Press

DALLAS— Kemba Walker scored 32 points and Jaylen Brown had 26 as the Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks 109-103 on Wednesday night.

Jayson Tatum added 24 points to help Boston prevail on a night when both teams were missing key players and struggled to shoot 40% from the field.

The Celtics held the Mavs 15 points below their season average, including a Dallas season-low 18 in the third quarter, with Luka Doncic’s absence felt more than in Dallas’ win Monday over Milwaukee.

Doncic sat out his second straight game for the Mavericks with a right ankle sprain, while Boston was without Gordon Hayward (left foot soreness) and Marcus Smart (left eye infection).

Kristaps Porzingis led Dallas with 23 points and 13 rebounds but fouled out in the final minute. Seth Curry added 20 points.

In each of the first three quarters, the Mavericks built a lead of at least eight points before Boston rallied to narrow the gap. Grant Williams hit a 3-pointer with 1:27 left in the third quarter to give the Celtics their first lead since early in the second.

Boston flipped the script in the fourth, with Brown hitting a 20-footer and Tatum a 3 to build an 83-78 lead. Tatum converted a three-point play with 6:38 to go to give the Celtics an 88-80 lead. After two Dallas free throws, Walker hit a 3 and then made four free throws in a row to extend the lead to double digits.

Dallas hit five 3s in the final 3:34 to trim the deficit but lost for the fourth time in its last six home games.

Walker scored 10 straight Celtics points to erase an early eight-point deficit and finished the first quarter with 16 points.

But Dallas held Walker scoreless in the second quarter and Curry and Porzingis keyed a 20-8 run to build a 10-point lead before the Celtics closed to 55-50 at halftime.

Bam Adebayo scored 23 points and Duncan Robinson had 15 for the Heat. Robinson made a pair of 3s in the fourth that stretched the lead to 14 points, and Nunn buried a 30-footer for a 99-83 lead.

Joel Embiid, who missed Sunday’s rout by the Nets with an upper respiratory illness, had 22 points and 19 rebounds. Harris scored 20 points.

Jimmy Butler scored 14 points for the Heat and was pretty much a non-factor until late in his second game back in Philadelphia.

    PELICANS 107, TIMBERWOLVES 99

MINNEAPOLIS  — Brandon Ingram scored 34 points and New Orleans snapped its 13-game losing streak with a win over short-handed Minnesota.

Jrue Holiday had 18 points and Lonzo Ball added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists off the bench for New Orleans, which was coming off a 108-101 overtime loss at home to Brooklyn a night earlier.

Playing without leading scorer and rebounder Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota lost its seventh straight game after shooting 38% from the field. Andrew Wiggins led the Timberwolves with 27 points.

    RAPTORS 112, PISTONS 99

DETROIT — Kyle Lowry had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for a triple-double and Toronto had an 11-0 run in the third quarter on its way to a win over Detroit.

The Raptors were without guard Fred VanVleet because of right knee injury. Then center Marc Gasol left in the first quarter with a left hamstring strain. Toronto still had enough firepower to handle the Pistons.

Detroit allowed 133 points in a loss to Washington on Monday night. The Pistons got frontcourt standouts Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond back from their injuries for this game, but they still allowed 70 points in the first half and 40 in the second quarter.

Drummond had 22 points and 18 rebounds for Detroit.

    CAVALIERS 100, HORNETS 98

CLEVELAND  — Collin Sexton scored 23 points, Cedi Osman had 18 and Cleveland held off a late Charlotte comeback.

Cleveland, which had lost 16 of 18, led the entire game but nearly squandered a 24-point lead in the third quarter.
Terry Rozier scored a career-high 35 points for Charlotte and hit five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, the last coming with 21 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 100-98.

Sexton dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds with 16 seconds left. Rozier popped open at the top of the key for a wide-open 3 with three seconds to go, but the shot hit off the rim and Sexton grabbed the rebound to finally secure the victory for the Cavs.

Rozier was 12 of 27 from the field and 7 of 15 on 3-pointers. Cody Zeller had 15 points for the Hornets.

Kevin Love had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Cleveland. Tristan Thompson added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

    BULLS 110, WIZARDS 109

WASHINGTON — Wendell Carter Jr. made a layup with 9.1 seconds left in overtime, completing Chicago’s rally from an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Washington.

Zach LaVine capped a 21-3 Bulls run with three free throws that tied the game at 96 with 5.5 seconds left in the fourth. Bradley Beal hit a jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining to put Washington ahead 98-96, but LaVine was fouled on the ensuing inbound play and hit two free throws to force OT.

Lauri Markkanen’s alley-oop basket gave the Bulls their first lead since the first quarter, 106-105 with 1:47 left in overtime.

Markkanen had 31 points and nine rebounds, and LaVine added 24 points.

Davis Bertans led Washington with 26 points, and Beal finished with 22.

In his return to Washington, former Wizards player Tomas Satoransky had 17 points.

    THUNDER 126, GRIZZLIES 122

OKLAHOMA CITY — Dennis Schroder scored 31 points, and Oklahoma City overcame a 24-point deficit and beat Memphis.

Danilo Gallinari and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander each scored 20 points and Chris Paul added 18 for the Thunder, who rallied from 26 points down to beat the Chicago Bulls on Monday.

Brandon Clarke scored 27 points, Jonas Valanciunas scored 24 and Ja Morant added 22 for the Grizzlies.

    NUGGETS 113, MAGIC 104

DENVER — Jamal Murray and Paul Millsap helped fuel a 24-0 run in the third quarter and Denver rallied to beat Orlando for the eighth straight time.

Murray finished with 33 points, including 13 in the pivotal third quarter. Millsap scored 14 of his 15 points during the third in his return from a strained quadriceps.

Trailing 69-50 with 9:18 left in the third, the Nuggets stormed back as they held the Magic scoreless for more than six minutes.

Nikola Jokic added 18 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds.

Nikola Vucevic scored 20 for the Magic, while D.J. Augustin added 18.

NBA: Giannis Antetokounmpo in absolute awe of LeBron James, calls the LA star ‘alien’

    By Agence France-Presse

LOS ANGELES  – Giannis Antetokounmpo paid tribute to LeBron James’ ”insane” career on Wednesday as he prepared to face the NBA icon in an eagerly-anticipated clash between the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers.

Antetokounmpo has been in blistering form for the Bucks this season, averaging 31.7 points per game while propelling Milwaukee to the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 24 wins and four losses.

But the 25-year-old reigning NBA MVP admitted on Wednesday he was in awe of Lakers star James, who is averaging 25.9 points and a league-leading 10.6 assists per game in what is his 17th season.

”It’s insane to see what he’s is able to do, but he’s LeBron James, he’s different,” Antetokounmpo said. ”He’s an alien. You expect it from him, but it’s crazy.”

Antetokounmpo said he uses the 34-year-old James as an inspiration for his own playing career.

”Obviously, for me, that’s one of my goals to be able to play at a high level for the next 10 years. But he’s about to turn 35 this month and he’s moving like that, playing like that, and just playing smart,” Antetokounmpo said.

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer meanwhile said he had seen no sign of James’s talent diminishing as he prepared his team for Thursday’s showdown against the Western Conference leaders.

”He just keeps doing it year after year after year,” Budenholzer told reporters. ”I’m very impressed. It’s great to be a part of what he’s done for this league for so long. You just don’t see the drop off.

”What James has done in our league is phenomenal. He’s just a very, very special player, so anytime you get to play against him — and now Anthony Davis is very similar and they’ve got great fits, great players around them.

”The thing we often talk about when you play a really good team is how you get tested and how you learn more about yourself. That’s the way I look at it and we’re excited about the opportunity.”

PBA: Baser Amer, Bolts blast TNT KaTropa’s ‘bully’ ways

    By Jonas Terrado

    Game Thursday
    (Smart Araneta Coliseum)
    7 p.m. — Meralco vs TNT KaTropa
    (Series tied 1-1)

Meralco guard Baser Amer is usually a man of few words once reporters have already pressed the record button.

But in a rare occurrence Tuesday, Amer took a more candid approach in describing how TNT KaTropa forward Roger Pogoy went too far with the physicality after two games of their PBA Governors’ Cup semifinal series.

Amer claimed that Pogoy pinched him several times since Game 1 that caused bruises in his stomach and legs.

“Ang dami niyang kurot sa tiyan ko at sa legs ko,” Amer said after the Bolts tied the series at 1-1 with a 114-94 rout of the KaTropa at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Hopefully makita ng referee yun kasi di na basketball e,” he added.

His frustration was evident in the early moments of Game 2 when television replays saw the Meralco guard giving Pogoy an elbow, with the TNT forward falling to the floor in the hopes of fishing a foul.

Pogoy later got into a heated exchange with Bolts team officials at the Meralco bench three minutes into the game, resulting in a technical for both him and assistant coach Chris Tan.

“Motivated na rin kami kasi yun nga nakakabastos na kasi wala naman akong ginagawa o wala naman kaming ginagawa sa kanila pero nandun yung pambu-bully,” said Amer.

Amer would rather not retaliate, choosing to focus instead on trying to put Meralco in the driver’s seat for Game 3 set Thursday night at the Big Dome.

A victory will put the Bolts a win shy of advancing to their third finals appearance in the last four editions of the season-ending conference.

Amer finished with 20 points as import Allen Durham got the needed support he lacked in the 103-94 defeat last Sunday.

Durham had his numbers, posting 44 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists in a game that saw Meralco lead by as many as 35.

“We felt in Game 1, we were too individualistic and we didn’t really execute offensively. Normally when you play good offense, everybody’s in the right spot and we have great spacing. In Game 1, we had none of that,” said Meralco coach Norman Black.

“But (in Game 2), because we really focused on just making sure we executed our offense, got the ball to our point of attack which is AD on our team, it made it a lot easy for us to space the floor and for him to score. That’s something we just have to continue to do in this series,” he added.

It was the other way around at TNT as import KJ McDaniels tied his conference-high with 51 points but lacked the support from the locals.

Pogoy, who refrained from commenting on Amer’s accusations, laid an egg as he failed to score a single point in 32 minutes while Jayson Castro missed all 10 shots and made all seven points through the free throw line.

President Duterte vows to increase budget for Tokyo Olympics-bound PH athletes

    By Waylon Galvez

With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics coming in seven months, President Rodrigo Duterte has asked more funding for the national team’s campaign in the hopes of finally winning that elusive gold medal.

Duterte’s comments came during the distribution of cash incentives to athletes who won medals during the 30th Southeast Asian Games in a ceremony held Wednesday night at Malacanang.

“I heard we are giving P100 million for the Olympics,” said Duterte in his speech attended by athletes and sports officials.

“Puwede tayo magdagdag?” added the country’s Chief Executive as he looked at Andrea Domingo, chairman chief executive officer of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

So far, two Filipino athletes have earned slots in the Tokyo Olympics — gymnast Carlos Yulo and pole vaulter EJ Obiena. But the scant figure is expected to increase as a number of athletes will see action in different Olympic Qualifying Tournaments starting January.

Rio Olympics silver medalists and Asian Games gold medal winner Hidilyn Diaz of weightlifting and judoka Kiyomi Watanabe lead the Filipino bets eyeing Olympic spots.

Duterte also mentioned the possibility of increasing the monthly allowances of national athletes following what he calls a “success story” in the SEA Games where the Philippines won the overall title for the first time in 14 years.

The President said that he will make arrangements with Congress for a significant increase in the monthly allowances, which is about P45,000 for ‘elite’ members of the national team.

“I’ll try to talk things over with Congress. Sana ‘yung allowance ninyo, dapat ‘yung pagkain, libre na. ‘Yung allowance ninyo, allowance na nyo ‘yan… Mga P250,000 a month, okay na siguro ‘yan,” said Duterte as athletes at the ceremony cheered and applauded the pronouncement.

“Holdapin ko pa ‘yung sarili nating bangko,” added Duterte in jest.

In the SEA Games, the national team won 149 gold medals, 117 silver and 121 bronze medals. He congratulated each and every athlete, to whom he also confered the ‘Order of Lapu-Lapu’ award.

Checks were given to athletes during the courtesy call at The Palace as gold medalists received P300,000, P150,000 for the silver and P60,000 for bronze medalists under the Athletes Incentive Act.

“Yung isang paa ko, laylay na. Kaka-semplang ko lang sa motor,” said Duterte, drawing laughs from his guests. “Pero sa harap ng mga athletes, walang sakit-sakit. Pero kanina, mahihimatay na ako.”

“I’m deeply honored to be in the presence of our athletes who have emerged victorious in the recently concluded 30th Southeast Asian Games held in our country. Your triumph showcases the patriotism and sporting prowess of our people to our neighbors in Southeast Asia.”

Duterte also congratulated the people behind the country’s successful hosting of Games, from the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee led by its chairman and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, Philippine Sports Commission William Ramirez – also the Chef de Mission – and Rep. Bambol Tolentino, president of the Philippines Olympic Committee.

“I’d like to greet everybody. Thank you to everybody connected in the success story of the SEA Games. It was really a windfall,” he said.

Aside from the generous cash incentives from the Philippine Sports Commission and President Rodrigo Duterte, the national team was conferred the “Order of Lapu-Lapu” for winning the overall championship in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Almost 600 medalists from the SEAG trooped to Malacanang Palace Wednesday to receive their cash reward. They were also conferred the said award which is given to those who are “deserving of merit and recognition and to fully express the President’s appreciation of the Filipino people’s contributions to the success of the campaigns and programs of the Government.”

Led by Team Philippines chef de mission and Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Ramirez, the national team, donning their official tracksuit, was warmly received by the President at the Rizal Hall.

Also in attendance were Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Philippine Olympic Committee president Bambol Tolentino, Philippine SEAG Organizing Committee chairman and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, Commissioners Celia Kiram, Arnold Agustin and Charles Maxey along with the presidents and secretaries general of the different national sports associations.

By law, a gold medal fetches P300,000, silver P150,000 and bronze P60,000.  Incentives for athletes alone is almost P79 million.  In a short program prior to the arrival of the President, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) turned over the check to fund the said incentives awarding consistent with RA 10699.

In his speech, Ramirez recognized the role of government in the success of the national team on its SEAG campaign saying “we are lucky to have a President who support us fully and has a big heart for our athletes.”

During  Duterte’s term, the national athletes were given nutrition support, higher allowances, refurbished facilities, new equipment and more opportunities for training and exposures.  “When we came in, the athletes received on P5000 meal allowance.  Now on top of that they also get P25,000 worth of nutrition support monthly,” explained Ramirez, adding that these investments on the national team paid handsomely by the landslide win of Team Philippines in the SEAG and “hopefully an Olympic gold soon.”

Pauline Lopez of taekwondo, Marck Espejo of volleyball and Jasmine Alkhaldi of swimming represented the gold, silver and bronze medalists respectively and received the check from the president in a ceremonial awarding.

Jeff Chan scored 11 of his 17 points in the second quarter, sparking a Ginebra pullaway that resulted in another blowout victory and a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five affair.

Chan was one of five players in double figures for Ginebra, which has made its shock 124-90 defeat to NorthPort in the series opener a distant memory.

Ginebra can make its way to a fifth finals appearance in coach Tim Cone’s tenure with a win on Friday at the Big Dome.

Import Justin Brownlee fired 41 points with 11 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and three blocks, Japeth Aguilar posted 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, Stanley Pringle 14 points and six assists and LA Tenorio 11 points and five assists.

Scottie Thompson had another all-around effort despite having just four points, producing six rebounds and eight assists.

But it was Chan’s basket that gave Ginebra the room to turn what looked like a tight affair until the end into another lopsided game in the semis.

He scored nine of Ginebra’s first 11 points in the second period before Pringle, Aguilar and Brownlee took care of matters to go into halftime with a 64-48 lead.

Ginebra, with Brownlee leading the charge, widened the gap in the third by scoring 36 against NorthPort’s 24 to enter the fourth up 100-72.

Import Michael Qualls had 32 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks, bouncing back from a 20-point outing in Game 2.

But his output was not enough to send the Batang Pier on the brink of elimination.

Injuries are also taking its toll on NorthPort, which missed veteran guard Sol Mercado and forward Kevin Ferrer.

Mercado sat out after hurting his ankle while challenging Tenorio’s three-point attempt in Game 2 while Ferrer continues to be bothered by a foot problem that forced him to miss the series opener.

The Batang Pier will look to rediscover the form that enabled them to reach the semis despite being seeded eighth in the playoffs.

Game 5, if necessary, is set Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

    The scores:

    GINEBRA 132 — Brownlee 41, J. Aguilar 18, Chan 17,  Pringle 14, Tenorio 11, Thompson 6, Mariano 6, R. Aguilar 5, Slaughter 4, Dillinger 2, Sargent 0, Caperal 0,

    NORTHPORT 105 — Qualls 32, Standhardinger 20, Taha 15, Anthony 14, Lanete 8, Teodoro 8, Elorde 7, Cruz 5, King 2, Escoto 2.

    Quarters: 36-31; 64-48; 100-72; 132-105.
