Ateneo downed University of Santo Tomas 1-0 on Sunday to jumpstart its UAAP Season 82 juniors football tournament campaign at the Rizal Memorial football Field.
Austin Basconcillo struck in the first four minutes of the match and held on to that edge to secure the Eaglets’ first victory.
The Junior Golden Booters almost made a late equalizer on a free kick in added time but Ateneo goalkeeper Artuz Cesar safely blocked RJ Jarandillo’s attempt.
Earlier, last year’s runner-up National University-Nazareth School bested De La Salle Zobel 1-0 behind the effort of Reuben Liansing, who struck in the 48th minute.
Action resumes on Wednesday at the same venue with reigning nine-time champion Far Eastern University taking on UST at 1:30 p.m., and Ateneo and NU clashing at 4 p.m. for the early lead.
