A report by ABS-CBN News disclosed that around 10,000 torchbearers are expected to join the relay.
The athlete-turned-media personality later clarified that she is not the country’s official flagbearer. “Will definitely be a proud Filipino there though.”
With the theme “Hope Lights Our Way,” the torch relay will kick off on March 26, 2020 in Fukushima Prefecture with all 47 prefectures covered to showcase the various “cultural and scenic attractions of the regions.”
According to the Games official website, “the flame will traverse Japan for a total of 121 days.” It also aims to pay homage and show solidarity with victims in the regions still recovering from the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
On March 12, the flame will be lighted up in ancient Olympia, Greece and will arrive at the Matsushima Airbase in Miyagi prefecture on March 20.
The Games will begin on July 24, 2020.
